Stress Mastery
Stress is for most individuals the single greatest drain on life energy.
This drain on life energy has a dramatic impact on health, performance,
relationships and enjoyment of life. It is simply not possible to sustain high
performance when under chronic stress.
The Stress Response is essentially a response by the body to a perceived threat. It is a physiological response. The stress response activates a cascade of Neurochemicals, including Adrenalin and Cortisol which cause the systems of the body to prepare for fight, flight or freezing in response to the threat. This is a survival response which has been hardwired into the human nervous system by eons of evolution. Our ancestors had very sensitive stress response systems and thus survived long enough to procreate.
The stress response system evolved to defend against physical threats to life.
Today, the stressors that we encounter are generally psychological. We are living with a stress response system which has become outmoded in our modern, highly stressful world. It perceives everyday stressors as threats to survival.
The stress response isn’t actually activated by the stressor but by our perception of the stressor. In other words, the stress isn’t caused by the stressor but in what we tell ourselves about the stressor. To a large extent, stress is in our minds.
The consequences of inadequate stress management are great. Chronic stress
is a factor in most illness, including cardio-vascular disease, cancer, auto-immune disease, hypertension, insomnia, headaches, most degenerative diseases and others. Stress is a factor in failed relationships and alcohol and drug abuse.
Cortisol which is one of the main hormones released in the stress response quickly gets to the brain during stress and has significant negative consequences. It interferes with glucose metabolism which means the brain doesn’t get the fuel it needs to function.
It also interferes with the transmission of neurotransmitters, meaning the neurons can’t communicate well. And finally, cortisol actually kills brains cells. Chronic stress is toxic to the brain and is a factor in dementia and Alzheimers.
In terms of performance, it is simply not possible to perform well under chronic stress. Because of the toxic effect stress has on the brain it greatly interferes with clear thinking and decision making.
At Brain Balance Technologies we use cutting edge neurofeedback technologies, biofeedback technologies, education and coaching to rewire the brain to respond to stress in a whole new way. A way that is much less stressful.
We can help the Brain learn how to engage the Parasympathetic part of the Autonomic Nervous system, which enables relaxation and higher performance. Most people under stress are stuck in the Sympathetic Mode and can’t slow the mind and body systems down in order to relax.
At Brain Balance Technologies, we can help anyone learn how to manage stress better and consequently perform better. And if desired we can take those motivated to a state of actual Stress Mastery, where stress becomes the servant of higher performance.
